APA Citation Style: What is APA?

APA Style 7 ed

This title is the official source for APA Style. It provides guidance on grammar, writing style, paper layout and formatting and provides examples of references and in-text citations. It also covers the use of images, numbers and data, tables and more.

APA Citation Style

APA is the citation style used for all papers and citations at ASM. This guide covers how to format and create citations and references in a paper using APA Citation Style (7th ed) and contains many examples of how to cite the different types of sources you are likely to use in your paper as well as how to format the overall paper.  You can either work your way through the guide or use the tabs to navigate to the sections that you need now.  It is recommended that you read through the formatting and set up sections, to give yourself a good foundation for the basics.

Why Use a Citation Style?

Citation styles provide a standardized way to organize and format papers and assignments, making it easier for readers to understand complex information and streamline and improve scholarly communication. Using a citation style shows that you understand the professional, ethical and legal publishing standards in your field.  It further shows you understand how to ethically use material you did not create. While many students don't believe their classwork isn’t as important as published work, their work can and do add unique contributions to academic communications.

Why We Cite

Simply put, we cite to show how we learned a particular piece of information.

As you work on a paper you will consult many sources. You read the research of others, building up your background knowledge and use it to create arguments and statements based on what you read. Citing it allows your reader to understand where the knowledge comes from. It also shows you as a responsible and ethical author  who understands how to give credit to those whose ideas you are using, This gives even greater credibility and authority to your work because citing shows the research work you've done. If your work is published, it will help future researchers to easily find where you found your information and to understand your research process.
